Weird traffic patterns in Nashville?

It normally takes me 25 minutes or so to get to commute from just north of downtown to the Cool Springs area on I-65, but I got there in just over 15 this morning, and I really wasn’t racing. I just must have hit a speedy pocket that pulled me along.

It reminds me of how, when I lived in the Bay Area and commuted from San Leandro to San Jose, if I aimed to be at work between 8:45 and 9, the drive took me about an hour and twenty minutes. If I aimed to be there more between 9:15 and 9:30, the drive took about 40 minutes. Not a bad savings in drive time for an extra half hour’s sleep.

Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be making any changes to try to emulate the pattern this morning; I’m guessing this was just a fluke.

How about you? If you commute, have you found tricks to make your drive faster? Have you found any weird traffic patterns in Nashville?

I’ve noticed that getting to Brentwood between 8:20am and 8:30am adds about an extra ten minutes to my commute. Funny how shooting for a certain time along with the masses can really slow you down.

From the Southeast side of town on I-24: If you leave at 6:55am, you can get downtown in 25 minutes. If you leave at 7:05am, count on it taking at least 45 minutes.

What a difference 10 minutes makes!

If you are coming from the North and headed to Maryland Farms, it is much faster to get off I-65 at Harding Place and take Franklin Rd. all the way down to Old Hickory. I sat for many mornings waiting to get off I-65 at OHB before trying this and realizing it cut a considerable amount of time off my commute. Not to mention you are moving the whole time and not sitting on the side of the interstate waiting to exit.

I have a similar commute to you. Live in East Nashville, work near the airport.

Check this out. I love that picture :-)

Only time traffic is ever rough is occasionally headed home on I-24.
Trick there…Trucks coming on to 24-west at Fessler’s Lane really slow things down and the right two lanes back up pretty far. Stay in the left two lanes until you get passed Fesslers then merge back to the right.

Paul, that’s a great pic. I’ll have to snap one of those on my commute some time. I have been taking lots of pics from the road, but none of them show that reverse commute goodness.

At the risk of messing up my morning commute, I can say that Franklin Rd./8th Ave. works just as well in the opposite direction (heading north in to town), at least as far as Wedgewood, where I get off. I drive past the 440/65 split and see stop-and-go traffic while cruising along at 50 mph.
