Desperately Seeking Bagels

Istock 000003980202Small

SWM seeks fresh-baked, chewy goodness for long-term relationship. Independents preferred. Must enjoy cream cheese, salmon and being halved for the sake of light toasting. I know you’re out there…I will find you.

Ok, so I might not be at that point quite yet but you get the idea. Does anyone know of a good, independent bagel bakery in Nashville?

In fact, I’ll make this interesting…submit your choice for best bagel bakery in our area, I will visit each one, pick a winner, the person that points me to the best (in my humble opinion) gets a MetroBlogging t-shirt.

Any takers?

Phillips Deli – there’s one on 5th and then one off of Franklin Road in Brentwood (Harpeth)
Not exclusively a bagel bakery, but they do make ’em fresh every day and they are awesome. I recommend the chocolate chip bagel.

Man I miss New York Bagel Co. At least I think that was the name of the independent bagel shop that used to be on West End. Man it was good. Not only did they have great bagels, but they also had a wide selection of cream cheeses.

    Man I miss that place.

Star Bagel on Murphy Road in Sylvan Park. Across from McCabe Park.

    Happy chewing.

I would maintain that nothing with chocolate chips in it is a bagel, by definition. The closest good independent bagelry I know of is Pratzel’s in St. Louis. I don’t think this is going to be of much help to you, but at least I’ve tried.

I would tend to agree about the chocolate chip comment. However it should be known that some people say that about the cinnamon raisin bagel falls under that category (i.e. anything that’s sweet).

For the taste test, I will probably focus on a cross-section including a Plain, an Onion/Everything, and a Cinnamon Raisin.

City Limits does their own bagels. It’s in West Nashville (ok, Bellevue) on Old Harding just after you cross the railroad tracks.

The bagels at the Publix in Bellevue on Hwy 70 S are surprisingly good. Since Publix is headquartered out of Florida, bagel-eater headquarters, it has a pretty good plain, or water bagel, as it’s known.

It’s worth a shot. It must be the same recipe for all Publix stores. Hope you like it!
